On Bios & Lineages

The editor of an anthology, in which I am proud to have my poems included, asked me to send some information for the headnote about my grandparents and parents. It made me well up—this invitation to think about them in in the context of my own writing. It was kind of amazing to pull their history into the threads of my own story in this way. How often do we get to publicly honor our lineages in our official bios?

Some Things Poets Know

  1. It is fascinating how poems will only work true when you expose yourself in them.
  2. Sometimes, the exposé (pose) must be slant.
  3. Poems are demanding.
  4. Unburying reveals what poems were always meant to be.
  5. That precise meaning shudders.
  6. That clear space of translation where something tremendous comes through.
  7. Allow energy to move.
  8. Self possession: you get to learn the multiple meanings of this.
  9. Writing may start out as rebellion and become continuity. (With the ancestors.)

Autoreminders on Lammas

8/3/2020

Some of my favorite magical-spiritual communities here in the Bay Area are Pagan, and I often find myself working with the Pagan Wheel of the Year. This Lammas, here are the self-reminders I am harvesting:

  • Finish things.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Move back into the gift/heart paradigm any time you fall out of it. Your work is your gift to the world. Wash away ego attachments when you offer it to the world.
  • Chaos and structure, together.
  • Trust the part of you that does not want to work in a 'normal' job. There is a different destiny for you.
  • Perfectionism stops you from connecting with people.
